England and Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a major pool stage encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with Scotland failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa before the final, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the pools play out according to the current world rankings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would remain separated from the likes of England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match aimed at launch the event.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's history.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
