Transgender filmmaker Sam Feder's latest film "Heightened Scrutiny" presents a powerful two-part perspective – simultaneously an emotional profile of a prominent transgender advocate and a critical examination of media reporting surrounding transgender issues.

Judicial Struggle at the Highest Court

The film documents ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio as he gets ready for oral arguments in the landmark Supreme Court case the Skirmetti case. These arguments happened in December 2024, with the court finally ruling in support of the state's argument, effectively enabling limitations on medical transition for trans minors to stay in effect across multiple US territories.

We made Heightened Scrutiny in merely 16 months, stated Feder during an interview. By contrast, my earlier film Disclosure took me half a decade, so this was a real push. Our purpose was to stimulate discussion so people would learn more about the case.

Human Story Amid Political Struggle

While Feder presents a extensive examination of how prominent publications have promoted transphobic narratives, the film's primary accomplishment may be its captivating depiction of Strangio. That is crucial to me – as transgender individuals, we have difficulties so much with our self-perception.

This methodology fosters authentic connection between Feder and Strangio, enabling the director to accomplish his goal of showing Strangio as a multifaceted individual and providing a document for coming generations of how persistently he and fellow activists have fought for transgender rights.

I don't want people to end up in a situation of constant hopelessness because of what the law is failing to provide us, shared Strangio. I aim to be in a method of using the law to minimize harm, but not to turn it into some type of conduit for our freedom aspirations. The government is not going to be the mirror through which we see ourselves.
