Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Release
However, a segment of conservative pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few are not, including prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
However, broader discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued after the release, particularly when compared with the loud demands for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to enact a bill requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were given physical binders of materials that included no new data.
