Substantial Web Disruption Impacts Numerous Sites and Apps

A widespread web outage has impacted dozens sites and apps around the world, with users experiencing issues connecting to the web due to difficulties at the web hosting platform.

The impacted services encompass Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with a host of Amazon-operated services like its main retail website and the Ring doorbell home security firm.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was disrupted along with its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, with further notifications of difficulties accessing the the tax authority site on Monday morning. Additionally in Britain, several Ring customers took to social media to complain their security devices were malfunctioning.

Just within Britain, reports of disruptions on individual apps reached the thousands for every service.

Amazon reported that the problem originated in the east coast of the US at the cloud division, a division that provides crucial online infrastructure for numerous firms, who lease resources on the company's servers. AWS is the biggest global web hosting service.

Just after late night (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), the company announced “increased failure rates and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a area on the east coast of the United States. The ripple effect seemed to disrupt platforms globally, and the problem monitoring service showing problems with the corresponding services in various regions.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that monitors internet outages, further indicated a rise in issues on that morning, with many of them located in the Virginia area, the region of the eastern US data center where officials confirmed the outage originated.
