Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to contest particular decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
